An IBAN does not replace the underlying domestic account structure. Instead, it places that national bank-account information inside a common international framework. This is why the opening four characters are consistent while the remaining length and composition vary by country.
The first two letters identify the issuing country or territory. The next two digits are check digits calculated from the full IBAN. These digits help automated systems detect many errors before a transfer is processed.
The remaining part is commonly described as the Basic Bank Account Number, or BBAN. Depending on the jurisdiction, it can include a bank identifier, branch identifier, domestic check digits and the customer’s account number.
The international standard allows every registered country to preserve its own domestic bank-account logic. As a result, one IBAN may contain 15 characters while another may contain more than 30. Within one country, however, the registered length is fixed.
On invoices and bank documents, IBAN Account Numbers are often grouped in blocks of four characters to improve readability. Electronic payment systems generally use the compact form without spaces. The underlying letters and digits remain the same.
The checksum can catch many common typing mistakes, including incorrect digits and some transposition errors. A checksum pass means the value is mathematically consistent with the IBAN standard.
A mathematically correct IBAN does not prove that the account is active, belongs to the named company or individual, accepts the intended currency or is safe to pay. Those checks require a bank, payment provider or approved beneficiary-verification process.
An IBAN identifies the customer account using an international structure. A domestic account number is the local account reference contained within that structure. A SWIFT or BIC code identifies the financial institution, not the customer account itself.
