What does Bank Routing Number Validation check?

Why exactly nine digits are required

Why the opening digits matter

The first two digits come from allocated routing-number series. A random two-digit prefix can still satisfy the checksum mathematically, so prefix validation is necessary in addition to the weighted equation.

How the checksum helps
